Ian Haysted
Ian Haysted was born in May 1963, in Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, England. He started playing the clarinet at the age of twelve and by the age of fifteen he had successfully auditioned for the Band of the Coldstream Guards. At the age of seventeen he was awarded the prize of 'Best Junior Woodwind Performer' in the British Army.
In 1981 he studied clarinet and saxophone with Paul Harvey at The Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall. During his Study at Kneller Hall, he won the 'Westminster Festival Prize' for outstanding musical performances. In 1982 - 90 he held the position of Principal Clarinettist in the Coldstream Guards Band. During this period he made many musical contacts and began his London freelance career with many London Orchestras.
He has traveled extensively around the world performing at many internationally renowned venues both as a soloist and ensemble member. Traveling and participating in many different musical cultures, has played an integral part in developing his musicianship and broadening his stylistic awareness. His visit to the Koisi Wind Ensemble, Tokyo, under the direction of Frederick Fennel was a great source of inspiration, encouraging further research into the field of quarter tones, multiphonics and acoustic effects. In 1996 he released an educational video ('Learn how to create Acoustic Effects') to enable other single-reed players to accomplish these skills, thus helping them to expand their repertoire and explore new techniques whilst developing a greater understanding of their instrument.
Ian is currently involved around the world in workshops, master classes, commercial jingles, library music and recording clarinet and saxophone works.
